Novo Mesto

Dolenjska metropolis

Meandering in three consecutive loops, the Krka River carved three promontories. Novo mesto’s ancient city core stands above the left bank of the middle one, while the other two are overgrown with forest.

The seven hills beside the Krka settled by the Illyrians around 1000 B.C. give the city its characteristic appearance. The region was later settled by the Romans, who built roads, developed commerce, and forced the local population to move down from the hills to the flatlands. In 1365,

the Austrian duke Rudolph IV founded the city of Rudolfswert, and in its principal outlines, Novo mesto still looks as it did then (it was encircled by a wall with high towers) even though the Turks attacked it and fires and the plague struck several times. A secondary school was built during the reign of Maria Theresa, and later the first National Center building in Slovenia. With its colourful cultural events, tourist sights, and sporting events, Novo mesto today is the economic, administrative, industrial, and educational center of Delonjska.
