Kranj

Prešeren's city

The rocky prominence on which ancient Kranj stands provided room for people to dwell several centuries B.C. With the arrival of the Slavs in the 6th and 7th centuries, a major settlement developed here, proven by the largest Old Slovene burial site in Slovenia, excavated in Glavni trg.

After losing its independence in the 9th century, Kranj was the seat of the Carniolan march with a border count and gave its name to the entire area (Kranjska) that remained a political and administrative unit until the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

In the Middle Ages, Kranj developed into an important commercial center and gained city status in the 13th century. The development of ironworks in Carniola and Carinthia in the 16th century influenced its economic rise because trade and commerce became very lively.

In the first half of the 19th century, the first manufactures appeared and at the end of the 19th century, the first industry. Thus, Kranj became the economic, commercial, cultural, administrative, educational, and religious center of the Gorenjska region, which it still is today.
